Shoot or pass, long or short, left or right? These are the decisions that the average footballer makes in a split second on the pitch. Combine this with good technical skill and a budding footballer is off to a fine start. In fact, it is this ability to read the game and ultimately make the right decision for the team that can lead to a child becoming a great player.
As coaches it's our job not only to judge just how far a player can progress in both the technical and mental aspects of the game, but also to help them develop the skills that they are lacking in. And as surprising as it may seem, a player that is lacking in one of these two aspects can still be considered a vital member of the team and become a solid player. Like we said earlier,it is the combination of these two skills that makes for a truly great player.
